Belay Devices
Which Belay device is best ?
There are essentially four types of belay device:
Simple stitch /rescue plate: is very lightweight and has high friction properties but because of small size is not so good at dissipating heat so not recommended for abseil use. Very popular with instructors as its possible to belay two people with some devices and also for indoor climbing.
Modern belay device: typically a shaped tube of metal with a swaged wire loop to connect to the belay point or harness (via an HMS) Usually they incorporate variable slickness (the ability to allow rope slip on purpose) depending on the direction in which they are used. Ideal for all forms of climbing and short abseils hence their popularity.
Auto/semi-automatic devices. Excellent for sport or indoor climbing where falls occur regularly or it may be necessary to hold the climber for a period of time. These are not a substitute for belayer vigilance and are not suitable for lead climbing as they arrest falls very quickly which can significantly increase shock loading on the protection.
Figure of 8 - These are NOT designed to be used as a belay device as they are too slick and the rope can easily flick over into a dangerous configuration. However they are sometimes useful in an emergency when used in conjunction with a prussik loop to abseil or to lower a stricken climber.

Advanced engineering gives this belay device a lot of versatility for the grams. It swivels on an axle to provide two modes of friction. One mode lets the rope cam through slots built into the side walls for greater friction. When you want less friction, turn the device over so the slots are out of the way.
Bomber cable keeper loop is rigid so it can't get tangled up.
Lightening holes throughout the tube keep the weight down.
For ropes from 8 to 11mm.

At this time, the ropes will wedge into the V-slots, arresting the fall. To release the ropes, loop the tag ends over the races on the side and pull down.

Anodised versus Polished
Anodised products look great but we sometimes get asked if there are any technical advantages. The answer is "yes" but there is a cost associated with the additional materials and time used in anodising components.
