Building a rack of passive gear Lead climbers need to have a wide range of gear to cope with the type of fissures in the rock of choice and avoid running out of gear half way up ! Passive protection comes in three basic sizes: Micros (for very small cracks), Nuts (for most common cracks up to finger width) and Hexes and passive camming devices for bigger cracks and pockets up to fist width. A nut remover tool is an essential item - useful for opening beer bottles as well as cleaning difficult gear placements. Anodised nuts last longer and are easier to identify but the harder surface doesn't bite so easily into the rock crystals. Both types have their fans and a selection is usually best.
