Copper and Aluminium (Aluminum) heads
To progress when there appears to be nothing except the finest cracks in the rock may require the use of copperheads or aluminium heads. Designed to be forced (hammered) into tiny imperfections and maleable enough to change shape to provide just enough protection to support body weight but will not hold a fall. Aluminium is lighter but doesn't last for so many re-uses as copper.

Pitons - for and against
The Piton ( aka: peg) excels in uses where traditional removable protection is either not strong enough, unable to fit (ultra-narrow or iced-up cracks for example) or a semi- permanent fixing is required.
Pitons are far less drastic than bolting (which requires drilling and significant alteration of the rock) but leaves scratches or scars on the rock so should be used sparingly.
Soft steel suits harder rock types as it moulds better to the rock for greater security while Hard Steel is best used in softer rocks or punching through hard ice.
We recommend that you do not use Pitons unless a) there is no alternative and b) they are specifically allowed in the region you are climbing.
