Choosing your quickdraws Quickdraws are essential to connect your rope to your protection, whether that's bolts on a sport route or nuts/friends and hexes in traditional climbing. Long routes will need more quickdraws and Sport routes require your every ounce of energy so the lightest weight equipment is desirable. Look for hot forged designs, wiregate carabiners and dyneema slings all of which reduce weight. Cheaper designs are no less effective but can get heavy when you carry a lot of equipment. Most traditional racks need 5 or 6 quickdraws or more for longer routes. It's usually a bit cheaper to buy ready made quickdraws but you can create your own using a couple of carabiners and a sling. It's useful to have a variety of sling lengths available to keep stresses on protection minimised and to allow the rope to run in as straight a path a possible to minimise friction. Carabiner stops can help prevent carabiners slipping around within the sling. We advise changing your quickdraw slings at least annually or whenever you take a big lob.

Clipper Quickdraws

Specialist Quickdraws

A metal pin ensures that no twisting of the karabiner takes place to negate the chance of a sideways loading. However should the pin not be in place then the krab still will withstand a sideways loading of up to 10 kN, a fixed sling means the karabiner cannot be taken.
