Stoves and lanterns
Choosing your stove
All stoves are not the same . . .
1. Multi-fuel stoves - ideal for trekking in very remote parts of the world where whatever fuel is available can be used. Designed for specialist users. Often heavier, more expensive and less efficient than gas stoves.
2. Dual fuel stoves: - liquid and vapour gas burners designed to run on cartridges which are ideal for low temperature or high altitudes where poor vaporisation may mean liquid is all you can get from your (inverted) cartridge.
3. Butane/Propane gas stoves - almost every other use.
Wind shields dramatically improve efficiency (so does covering your pot to retain heat)
Stability - wide bases and wide tops and low center of gravity are best. You can of course always build a ring of stones around your stove to support pan or burner or both, or even just make a small hole in the ground to support the canisterif you do either of these, put everything back as you found it.
Weight is important for trekking or back-packing but don't forget that the fuel is likely to be the greatest bulk.
Price - generally the more you pay the better engineered the product which means more calories of your fuel are turned into usable heat so the less fuel you'll need (to carry.)
Piezo ignition - no need for matches, very useful in damp or draughty conditions.
Boil time - standard comparison to boil a litre of water in a closed container at Sea Level - a useful comparision of efficiency of stoves and indicator of their maximum heat output.
All our stoves use standard screw fit cartridges but can be fitted with converters to take the ubiquitous sealed piercable ones too.
