The Thommen Everest (and Classic) altimeter plus barometer remains a standard of excellence by which others are judged. Regardless of the model, the operating principle remains the same. An evacuated aneroid capsule compresses and expands with changes in absolute pressure. These changes are transmitted to the needle by a suitable gearing system and registered on a pressure scale and an altitude scale. The aneroid capsule, vital core of every Thommen Everest and Classic isconsists of two membranes made of superior tempered copper/beryllium alloy. The two membranes are are welded together by an electron beam under extreme vacuum to for the evacuated aneroid capsile.

Movements of the capsule face generated by changes in atmospheric pressure are amplified by some 860 times by a high precision mechanical drive and precision balanced indicating needle.

All shafts are hardened and have rolled ends; 19 synthetic Ruby bearings with olivated holes are employed to ensure long friction free life. No lubricants are used so you can count on superb performance even in the coldest climates.

With the mechanical battery-free THOMMEN Classic altimeter plus barometer, it is possible to read the existing altitude during outdoor activities, but also to determine height difference, absolute atmospheric pressure (QFE) and the reduced atmospheric pressure at sea level (QFH).

These functions and information are an invaluable orientation tool to realize an imminent weather change in alpine areas. Each THOMMEN Classic works with a temperature compensated and calibrated mechanism.

All Classic (and Everest) Thommen altimeters are shock resistant and very sturdy. They feature temperature compensation from -20C to +40C and are calibrated to within 10m / 30 feet. Ideal for mountaineers, climbers, off trail skiiers and hikers to quickly and reliably check present elevation and weather patterns. Unique dual needle system provides a 'memory' facilty and secondary Km scale leaves a full 360 degree rotation for each 1000m / 300 feet for clear indication even in the worst of weather conditions.

Thommen Repair and Recalibration Service
We are pleased to offer an official repair and calibration facility for Thommen sports altimeters. Simply buy this service and send your altimeter to us at the address we provide and we will do the rest.

Minimum charge:
In the event your altimeter is not repairable or beyond reasonable economic repair it will be returned to you . A minimum charge of £40 covers the assessment and the International insured carriage to return it to you. The balance of £70 will be refunded to you.

Maximum Charge
Assuming it is repairable, it will be overhaulled and repaired, fully recalibrated in Thommens facilities in Switzerland and returned via International insured service.

In the unlikley event that the repair charges exceeds £110 you will be contacted to authorise the repair before we proceed further.

Which models can be repaired:
Most current and older Thommen models can be serviced provided that they do not have a leather case which is fixed or rivetted permanently to the altimeter itself.
